9 Tips for Great Copywriting

A crash course in improving your writing. Use these tips to strengthen your copywriting skills.

In 2021, I became obsessed with copywriting.

  • I read 16 books

  • Wrote 326 pieces of content

  • Spent 4,400 hours crushing copywriting blogs

My copywriting has helped me:

Here are 9 tips for great copywriting:

1. Write Like You Talk

Copywriting is a conversation.

Don't talk AT your customer.

Talk WITH your customer.

Make it fun.

Here is a great example from Herb:

2. Make it Scannable

8.25 seconds is the average human attention span.

Make your copy easy on the eyes.

And you win.

I create threads on Wednesday and Sunday on Twitter that average 4 million views. The threads are always easy to scan and understand.

Here is an example:

3. Use Seeds of Curiosity

But there’s more.So read on.But I didn’t stop there.Let me explain. Now here comes the good part. Here is why.But first, let me talk about...

These are seeds of curiosity.

Use them.

Great copywriting is like a slippery slide.

"As you start to slide down and build momentum, you try holding onto the sides to stop, but you can’t stop. You continue to slide down the slide despite all your efforts to prevent your descent. This is the way your copy must flow."

- Joseph Sugarman

4. Leverage Templates

Don't reinvent the wheel.

Use proven copywriting patterns to be successful.

I spent 10,000+ hours studying copywriting techniques and summarized the key patterns into a guide.

Here's a little gift for you:

Hope you find it helpful.

Share it with your friends (they will love you for it).

5. Understand The Purpose of A Sentence

The purpose of this sentence is to get you to read the next sentence.

And this sentence should get you to read the next one.

Captivate people.

Every word counts.

6. Practice, Practice, Practice

Copywriting is like golf ⛳️

The more you play, the better you get.

Wake up and write. Every day.

Trust me.

You'll be a copy jedi in no time.

7. Optimize for Emotion

Aim to elicit a strong emotional response from the reader.

Here is a list of emotions you can stir up in someone:

  • OHHH - "now I get it"

  • NSFW - "that's crazy"

  • LOL - "that's so funny"

  • AWW - "that's so cute"

  • YAY - "that's great news"

  • WTF - "that pisses me off"

  • FINALLY - "someone said what I feel"

I aim to hit 2 of the 7 emotions (at least) in everything I write.

8. Learn from The Best

Here is 1 tool, 1 website, and 1 book I study weekly to get better at copywriting:

9. Be Authentic

You have a unique voice - use it.

Have fun expressing yourself.

Let your inner artist free.

Aim to REV up your writing:

  • Be Real

  • Be Engaging

  • Be Vulnerable
