5 Interview Questions to Avoid Bad Hires

The Soulful Entrepreneur #012

Hey 👋 - Matt here.

I'm writing you from the beach in Montauk.

I've had a successful exit and wasted $200k+ on bad hires.

The MOST important thing to success: hire A players.

Here are 5 interview questions I always ask.

Today’s issue takes 1 minute to read.

Enjoy!

1. Would you ever want to be a CEO?

I learned this from a successful founder with multiple $100M+ exits.

This is a test to see if someone embraces responsibility.

Their answer will tell you a lot about their character.

For example, if they laugh and say "no way, that's way too much work and I don't like managing people" you may not hire that person for a role that involves managing people.

Not everyone needs to want to be a CEO.

But they need to enjoy taking responsibility if they want to work with me.

2. What separates a great from good [insert role]?

Test their competency.

See if they see greatness the same way you do.

If you're not aligned, it's a no.

3. How do you deal with ambiguity?

Resourcefulness is key in startups.

We don't spoon-feed people at Herb.

See how the candidate deals with uncertainty.

You want someone who is independent and can solve problems.

4. How did you hear about the role?

Hiring is like sales.

You want to know what channels people are coming to you from.

This will allow you to sharpen your recruitment funnel.

I find a lot of success with Twitter and LinkedIn.

5. What motivates you?

This question sounds basic but it works.

It's a great way to learn about someone on a deep level.

Start a convo around this and see what makes them tick.

That's it.
