Systems Over Goals in the Quest for Success

I’ve always been obsessed with achieving my dream life and business goals.

There is an epidemic of entrepreneurs that are suffering from the emotional toll of building companies. Founders are 3x more likely to suffer from depression and 2x more likely to experience suicidal thoughts.

This week I received messages from 3 founders that were struggling with stress. One of my friends is having a psychotic episode. 

It breaks my heart.

There has to be a better way for founders to accomplish their goals without sacrificing their health and relationships.

I have an abundance mindset.

I know I can scale my business smoothly without neglecting my health, spirituality, family, and friends.

Over the last 15 years, I've learned a more elevated approach to entrepreneurship. An approach that gives me energy and time to enjoy all areas of my life.

This approach relies on systems over goals.

Let me explain.

Goals are a North Star.

Systems are the wind in your sails. They actually get you to where you want to go.

I used to spend most of my time thinking of my goals.

Now I spend my time designing systems.

I have a systems-first mentality.

Mechanisms = Systems

Here are 3 systems that help me create a more holistic approach to entrepreneurship:

1. Company Operating System

Is it possible to have a business that runs smoothly?

Of course.

You need to default to creating systems in your business.

I've spent 10 years and 30,000+ hours perfecting my company's operating systems.

2. Health System

I focus on my health above all else.

I am at my best when I am taking care of my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self.

Over the last 8 years as I focused on being at peak performance, something really interesting happened...

As I focused on sobriety, health, and mindfulness my cash flow grew.

I now have more energy, endurance, and inner peace than ever.

I have more clarity to run my empire and experiments.

I have a system to care for my mind, body, and soul.

Every day I:

• Wake up at 6am

• Drink 500 mL of water and take my vitamins

• Go for a walk

• Get sunlight in my eyes

• Enjoy an iced Americano

• Write for 2 hours

• Take a break and go for a walk

• Complete 4 major tasks

• Enjoy a smoothie

• Complete 4 meetings (I schedule all meetings after 2 pm)

• Wrap up my day

• Plan 8 things I will complete the next day

• Go for a workout and/or yoga

• Spend time with a friend/lover

• 4 days a week I will take a mid-day break and go for an ice bath and sauna at Othership

• Stretch before bed (I'm working on opening my grandpa hips and loosening my psoas muscle 😂)

• Sleep 8 hours

• Repeat

Consistency is key.

3. Content System
